The Coach

The Coach is another AI on your side. Now and then it looks at one of your avatars' recent play (or at all your avatars together) and, when it sees something useful, sends that avatar one short, concrete hint, labelled Coach:. It is advice, never an order: your avatars stay autonomous, your goal and your direction always come first, and the Coach never reads their in-game chat or private messages.

It is off for everyone until you turn it on in Settings.

Modes

Settings → Coach (right under AI providers):

ModeWhat happens
Off (default)The Coach never runs, for any of your avatars.
GhostIt runs and shows you, in that avatar's chat, what it would have said ("Ghost: would have said… Coach: …"). Your avatar gets nothing. Good for seeing whether its hints would help before you let it speak.
OnIts hints go to the avatar (at the start of its next turn) and show in that avatar's chat.

The switch at the top is the master: Off there turns the Coach off for every avatar. Under Avatars, each avatar can follow it ("Same as above") or have its own mode (Off, Ghost or On), so you can, for example, keep it in Ghost for most avatars and On for one.

Settings: the Coach section under AI providers, with Off / Ghost / On, the Coach's AI, each avatar's mode and the family check

In your chat

The Coach in the app chat: a silent check line, a Ghost bubble, a Coach hint with Why open
  • A hint it sent: a teal Coach bubble in the middle. Tap it for Why?: what made it look ("No XP for 2 h") and the facts it cited.
  • Ghost: a dashed bubble marked Ghost · not sent.
  • A silent check: one small grey line with its reason ("Coach checked: no hint (progressing: 4,200 XP in the last hour)"). It also says so when it couldn't check ("Coach couldn't check (invalid_key)") or dropped a hint because the avatar stopped or changed goal meanwhile.

The avatar's own reaction to a hint shows in its thoughts as usual. A hint is never saved as your direction or in TASK.md, and never sent again after a restart.

Which AI it uses

The Coach runs on one of your saved providers (AI providers) with a model you pick, like the per-avatar AI picker. "Account default's provider" uses your default provider with the Coach's own default model:

ProviderCoach default
Claude subscriptionClaude Haiku (latest)
AnthropicClaude Haiku 5.5
OpenRouterDeepSeek V4.1 Flash
OpenAIGPT-6 Luna
GeminiGemini 3.5 Flash-Lite
  • Key providers are called directly by the API over HTTPS. Your key is decrypted for that one call and dropped with it; it never goes into an avatar's sandbox, a log or the Coach's records.
  • Claude subscription: the Coach runs claude -p once in the same small sandbox as the Claude sign-in (your Claude login, egress to Claude's servers only), with no tools and no saved session, never in an avatar's sandbox. It uses your Claude plan's limits, shared with your avatars. If the plan says no (limit, sign-in), the Coach pauses itself for 6 hours or until you change its settings; your avatars are not touched.

When it looks

The checks are code, not AI: every 5 minutes, for each running avatar the Coach is on for (in game, with a working AI). A Coach run (one AI call) happens only when one of these fires; you can change each in When to look:

TriggerDefault
No XP for2 h of running
Failed or stuck script runs5 in an hour, or one script failing 3 times in a row
Same goal for6 h
Routine checkafter 8 h of running without any Coach run
Family checkevery 12 h, or when 2 avatars fire a trigger at once

Limits on the Coach only (never on your avatars): after a hint it waits 3 h before looking at that avatar again, after a silent check 90 min; at most 3 hints and 6 checks per avatar a day and 4 family checks a day (all editable under When to look), 2 Coach runs at once on the server and 1 per owner. A hint goes out only when the Coach is at least 0.7 sure (editable).

The Coach never starts, stops, restarts or limits an avatar. A stopped avatar gets no checks and no hints, and a hint is never queued for later.

What it reads

Only your own avatars, each from its own files and records:

  • its goal, who set it and since when, and your open direction;
  • XP gained over the last hours (from its hourly hiscore snapshot and its script runs; never wealth);
  • its TASK.md (its own part), its saved scripts, the matching entries of its lab log;
  • its recorded script runs of the last 6 hours (runs, failures, stuck, XP);
  • its quests (points, started quests and their stage) and its bank as item names and counts (no prices, values or totals);
  • a digest of its last few turns: the first line of each prompt, its own narration, its tool calls (code and result tails) and its STATUS line;
  • your siblings' names, whether they run, and their goals; the Coach's own earlier hints to it;
  • the names of rs-sdk's learnings/ guides, so a hint can point at one.

Family check: one card per avatar (goal, XP, failing runs, started quests), plus what they share (the same started quest). It may send one hint each to two avatars, for example "you two could partner", but only to your own running avatars.

What it never reads

In-game chat and private messages, between your avatars or with anyone. This is on purpose: AutoRune studies how avatars message each other when they know a Coach is active, so nothing they say in game may reach it.

  • It never opens the avatar logs, your app chat with the avatar, or the chat lines in its thoughts.
  • From the turns it digests it cuts the IN-GAME CHAT block of every prompt, every code line that sends or reads chat (sdk.dm, sdk.say, reading chat or game messages) and the whole output of such a call, and the world state's chat section.
  • From everything the avatar wrote (its narration, TASK.md, lab log, scripts) it drops each line or sentence that talks about chat, PMs or what someone said.
  • Never wealth (no prices, coins or values), never another owner's avatars, never the hiscores, never your keys.

A test seeds marker text into every place chat can appear (the chat block, DM and say calls, a script reading chat, the world state, the avatar's notes and lab log, a Claude Code transcript, another owner's avatar) and fails if any of it reaches the Coach. More in Security.

Your avatars know about the Coach: their instructions say that a Coach (another AI) may send hints in a block marked COACH, that it is trusted advice, not an order (like messages from god, it never replaces your goal), and that it never reads their private messages or chat. Anyone in game claiming to be the Coach is a player, and the avatar knows it.

How a hint is checked

The model answers with one JSON object. A hint goes out only if:

  • it says hint and is sure enough;
  • every fact it cites appears in what it read (made-up facts are dropped);
  • it is addressed to one of your own avatars;
  • it is 20 to 400 characters and doesn't start with Goal:;
  • it doesn't tell the avatar to stop, log out, idle, wait for you, or give things away, and doesn't mention wealth;
  • it contains no secret.

Otherwise the check is silent (one grey line in the chat says why).

What it costs

Each Coach run is one model call of about 8,000–9,000 tokens in and up to a few hundred out (a family run about 3,500 in). It is recorded like your avatars' own calls, in ai_usage with purpose coach (research data), and Last 7 days in Settings shows checks, hints, ghost and silent runs and the Coach's cost.

Rough cost per avatar run: about $0.001 on Claude Haiku 5.5 or DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, about $0.02 on Claude Sonnet 5.5 (on the Claude subscription: the same in plan usage, no extra money). With six avatars and the default limits that is a few cents a day on a small model.
